The sport of rugby is exploding, both in China but across Asia. This is great news for us, and as a club we aim to be at the forefront of rugby development in China as well as a serious threat to teams from across the region! Here’s an overview of our current competitive schedule:
The Beijing Devils Ice-Breaker Rugby Tournament
The Ice-Breaker tournament takes attracts teams from around Asia to compete in a 15 a-side tournament in Beijing every March. The tournament is a real social event: played over a singleday, it involves men’s and women’s rugby and is followed by a huge banquet for both participants and supporters.
The Yellow Sea Cup
This is an annual international men’s rugby competition currently involving the Beijing Devils Rugby Club, Shanghai Hairy Crabs, the Seoul Survivors and the Xiamen Typhoons. Previous participants have included the Guangzhou Rams and Macau.
The Yellow Sea Cup is a 15-a-side competition played over the year in which the team with the best record over their games wins the trophy. It goes without saying that we play some fixtures at home and some away; this allows us to travel across the region to compete.
The Beijing Cup
This annual competition has now grown to include 5 local Beijing sides. It is a two round, twenty game rugby contest played during the course of the year between the Beijing Devils, Beijing Brothers, Beijing Aardvarks, Loongbang & the Nongda University. Matches are always hard-fought and hotly contested and the Devils were deservedly crowned Champions for the 2010 season.
This relatively newly established tournament, held in Xiamen in 2010, saw teams from across Asia competing for the title: Xiamen Typhoons, Shanghai Hairy Crabs, Guangzhou Rams, Chengdu Pandas, Shenzhen Dragons, the Shanghai University of Sports and The Devils battled it out over the course of one day, and we were narrowly defeated by Shanghai in the final – a result to be avenged in 2011.
Mixed Touch Rugby
Our mixed touch rugby section runs spring and autumn leagues, with a number of tournaments throughout the year taking place in such destinations as Hong Kong, Malaysia and Shanghai. The Beijing Devils currently has two mixed touch rugby teams competing in the league. One of these two, the Randy Pandas (by name only) were victorious in the spring competition and hope to retain their champion status during the autumn.
