The She Devils’ second run out proved to very different from their first – from the first seconds they overwhelmed a larger but less agile Seoul second team. The Devils chose to receive and immediately started to move the ball well, Jeannie Ivanov touching down in the first minute to set the tone for what became a whitewash in no time.
From the restart, Lucy Francis won the ball deep in Seoul’s half and unselfishly passed for Ivanov to add a second, before adding one of her own. The versatility of the Devils’ forwards, all of whom regularly slotted into the back line to maintain an overlap, allowed them to continually find and exploit gaps in the Seoul defensive line, and Francis added a well worked try of her own before Jane Cheung collected a fantastic flat pass from Madell and used her strength to drive over under the posts.
In the second half, Maja Wichrowska’s excellent support running was rewarded with a try and Madell opened her account close to the death. At some point (no idea when, it was getting repetitive by then) Jane Cheung scored again before substitute Tamara Cano popped up to hammer one more nail into Seoul’s leaky coffin. A game notable not only for champagne passing and support running but also for Ben Peacocke’s refereeing debut.
